Strong Earnings Growth In Third Quarter of 2004

The Bank reported net income of $270 thousand for the quarter ended September 30, 2004, an increase of $122 thousand, or 82.4%, from $148 thousand in the third quarter of 2003. Net income per diluted share was $0.22 for the third quarter of 2004. This was an increase of 57.1% from $0.14 reported for the third quarter in 2003. The percentage growth in diluted earnings per share is lower than the reported percentage growth in net income because of a large increase in shares outstanding. This increase is primarily due to exercises of warrants and options in the second half of 2003 and additional option exercises during the second quarter of 2004. Zissimos A. Frangopoulos, President and CEO, stated, "We are very pleased with the continuing gains in our performance and profitability. The third quarter results reflect the success of our business plan and the discipline in our financial management."

New National Check Clearing Procedure Beginning This Fall

This fall, a new law (known as "Check 21") took effect that allows U.S. banks to begin presenting images (copies) of checks for payment, rather than the original check. You may begin seeing these copies instead of your original check in your monthly statement. This system will allow checks to clear faster and may help to reduce fraud. Many banks have already switched over to this process, and we anticipate that our customers will see this change in due course. In early April, we sent all customers a letter discussing Check 21 along with the brochure "Check 21 and You." If you have any questions, please stop at any of our locations to talk to a Personal Banker and pick up an extra copy of "Check 21 and You," which explains details of this new program.

Protect Your Financial Information!

Be careful of so-called "shoulder surfing." This is when someone gains access to personal information by standing close to you in a public setting. For instance when using a debit card in a public place, someone standing by you with a cell phone may actually be recording video (some cell phones are equipped with both still photo and video capability) of you entering your PIN number. Stealing your debit card would then give them immediate access to your account. To help avoid this, be aware of what the people around you are doing when using debit cards in public.
